Deus ex Machina: A Digital Bloodletting

Cabin Fever

The snows subside, and ice retreats, signalling the drowsy thaw.
Hints of life and spark clamber to the edges.
The wild parts of youth hunger to sprint and gallop in glee,
but wisdom cautions to stretch your muscles first.

Savor it all and remember that urgency is fleeting.

24 years have slipped by
The boomerang flight of dreams
We, us, you and I.

When I was a kid, my dad would play 8-tracks on this tiny “portable” 8-track player.  I guess it was modern for the time.  One of his most favorite bands was “The Charlie Daniels Band”.  Given that he was the spittin’ image of Charlie and mistaken for him quite often, it’s no wonder.  He was rarely seen without a cowboy hat and boots, but I digress.

For those who’ve never had to sit/suffer through 8-tracks, there typically is no fast-forward or rewind.  You listen to the entire album from front to back.  Some of the later players had the ability to jump to a next track but it was all analog and made lots of loud clunking noises…no joke.  With that being said, if the best track was the first, you would play it, then jump to the last.  Sit through the last track, and wait for the cartridge to “flip” over and play the first track again.  Man, there were a lot of carts that I did that on.

Anyway, one of my most favorite tracks by Ole’ Charlie was the title of this post.  Even at a young age, I could tell this song epitomized my dad, so I felt a kinship to it.

Happy Birthday, Pops.

Today would have been 59 for you.

Love you, miss you.

It started with some port, followed by wine, and topped off with whiskey.  That was enough to send me back in time.

About a year ago I was building a gate on my deck.  When I finished, I just happened to say out loud: “What do you think, Dad?”  That was enough so send me crashing.

Tonight it was sugar cookies.  Feeling nostalgic I made some hoping they would taste like mom’s used to.  Not even close.

There was no wreck.  This captain has weathered rough seas before.

Yarr…

Captain
